Vivien Ebright Chung

Vivien Ebright Chung (b. 1980, Santa Cruz, CA), is an artist working in Los Angeles. She received her BFA from California College of the Arts, San Francisco, where she took interdisciplinary classes in both fashion and painting. Her understanding and interest in the body, clothed and unclothed, has hugely influenced the direction of her painting. Using lush sensual mark making and rich color Ebright Chung explores the ongoing conflict between the sensual nature of humanity and the intellectual and spiritual. Drawing on familiar tropes of art history and literature her work aims to document the inescapable joy and sorrow of being human. She uses life drawing as well as personal experience, motherhood and friendships to draw upon as subjects for her works. Recent exhibitions include: Verdant Arcadia, Trophy Room LA, Los Angeles (2024 Solo show), Mired In Bloom, Speedy Gallery (Santa Monica 2024), Just Like Heaven, Random Access Gallery, Syracuse NY, (2024 group), The Drawing Show, SADE Gallery, Los Angeles, (2024 group), My Hollywood, Gallery Mariposa, Los Angeles (2024 group), My Favorite Things, Trophy Room LA, Los Angeles (2023 group); Power, Transport Gallery, Los Angles (2023 group); Hoarders at Quarters, Quarters Gallery, Los Angles (2023 group), Flower Shop, Smoke The Moon, Santa Fe (2022 group).

I make paintings that are me, that depict aspects of myself. I want the viewer to feel wrapped up in me, without ever having met. I previously painted pictures that held the viewer at a distance, where aesthetics and intellect trumped emotion, but in recent years that didn’t feel right to me, it left me cold. My aim is always to be in conversation with what painting is, to marvel at what a thing it is, so peculiar and yet accepted as a great form of communication, if not the greatest form. I just love painting really.
