GEORGIA ELROD
Midnight Oil
2021
mixed-media on paper
8x11 Inches (+frame)
My recent work posits physicality as a kind of living abstraction and poetic space, presenting bodily forms that can be both known and unidentifiable. I begin with many ink and gouache works on paper to cultivate the imagery into larger mixed media oil paintings. The works toggle between transparency and opacity; they invite the viewer to the edge of knowing. They evoke a temporal, twilight atmosphere to express fleeting moments in time within and between bodies, their narratives often embedded with autobiographical meaning. I paint on unstretched canvas directly on the wall and build the surface using acrylic, oils, graphite, and pastels of all kinds, often alternately layering and removing. The surfaces both reflect and pursue embodiment in all its ineffable, fleeting, absurd, or profound moments.
